Named for Urx Vornaal, a Chadra-fan who was the first to contract it. Vornaal was on an expedition to the wilderness of Felucia. He came into contact with an unknown lifeform—in the dense fungal jungles of that world it is estimated there are as many as 3.2 million uncatalogued species—and shortly after returning to his ship in orbit, the entire crew was decimated. The vessel was discovered by rescue parties two weeks later when it did not check in on time at its next port-of-call, and the first rescue team was lost but was able to send out a warning to those who followed. From the ship’s logs and the remains of the crew, it was determined that this was a never-before-encountered and highly-contagious affliction causing flesh to rot off of the bone of its victims.
Samples were taken by leading biotech firms for study and storage in their vaults. It was discovered fairly quickly that large amounts of bacta are effective in treating the disease if the infected are reached within 4 hours of exposure. Vaccines are being researched, but none have yet been developed that are safe and effective.
